Home-Delivered Meals
Home delivered meals, HDM, is a federally funded program that provides healthy meals and friendly smiles to 2,500 homebound older adults daily in Allegheny County.
Eligible Recipients are:
Older adults that are sixty (60) years of age or older who are homebound and unable to shop or to prepare meals.
The type of meal delivered is a nutritious hot meal that meets one-third of the older adult’s daily food requirements. Meals include but are not limited to:
- 3. Oz protein; meat, fish, beans, poultry.
- 2-1/2 cup servings of fruit and/or vegetables.
- ½ pint milk (whole, 2%, skim)
Special diets are available. Special diets include diabetic, calorie controlled, low salt, low fat or a combination of the ones listed. A prescription from your physician is required.
In recognition of the multiple needs of the “whole person” the Home Delivered Meals program is committed to service, provision, and coordination within the broad continuum of nutrition, health-related and home care services.
There is no fee, but a suggested voluntary donation {$2.50} is accepted from the consumer of the meal. Donations are encouraged and used to supplement the government funding, and to expand the home delivered meals program.
How the meal is delivered to your home:
The meal is delivered by some paid drivers, but also by many concerned volunteers, to the doors of the homebound. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday (except holidays) between the hours of 10:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M.
To Cancel the Service, call your HDM provider. You may cancel for a temporary break in service due to an away from home visit or a hospital stay, or you can permanently terminate the service. Meals may not be delivered due to inclement weather. Listen to your local radio/TV station or call your HDM provider.
HDM are just a phone call away, and service lasts as long as needed-days, weeks, months. Find the agency in your community and call for service.
A gift of Home Delivered Meals is a wonderful way to help a neighbor or honor someone’s memory. Gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations, or deferred gifts through wills, trusts, stocks, and life insurance are welcomed. All contributions are tax deductible. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated.
